The World Outdoor Tug-of-War Championships have ended, held in the Fadura facilities, in Getxo, between 16 and 19 September.

The call has been a complete success, both in the sports aspect, and in the organizational part.

The club championships and the world championship between nations have been contested in Fadura over these four days.

With regard to the results achieved by the participating Basque clubs, Gaztedi has obtained a total of 4 medals: gold and bronze in the 560M category and gold in 500W. In addition, a 4th place in the 540W category.
Goiherri also achieved a bronze in the 600MU23 category.

Mutriku and Getxo have not been so lucky and close this championship without medals.

Focusing on the World Championship by nations, Basque Country had some unforgettable moments on the Saturday afternoon and the effort made was rewarded with two gold medals, in the categories of 560M and 500W.

The youngest members of the national team also achieved a bronze in today’s match in 600MU23.

Participation and data on the world championship

Athletes from 17 countries have been present in Getxo and, finally, 630 people were accredited from the different delegations.

A total of 39 tug-of-war clubs took part in the Championship between clubs on Thursday and Friday, forming 73 teams for the different competitions.
 On Saturday and Sunday the competitions were held between nations.

At the organizational level, as already announced at the press conference, this is the first international tug of war event that has been held since the pandemic broke out.

And organizing it has been a challenge to ensure both the development of the championship at the sports level, as well as to preserve the health of the participants.

Extreme measures were taken. Hence, a diagnostic tests plan was established and subsequent isolation for all the people involved in the championship and the groups were separated into bubbles. They have been isolated between Fadura and their respective accommodation during their stay in the Basque Country.

Fadura has become for these four days the headquarters of the World Championship for all purposes, given that even the meals have been served with catering in the facilities. During these four days almost 3000 menu packs have been distributed.

The organization, management and care of all the areas has been possible thanks to the invaluable work performed during the last two years by the world of tug-of-war and the different organization groups in the technical aspects. Invaluable collaboration has also been received from more than 125 volunteers who have helped in the different needs at the logistic level, maintenance of the competition field and facilities, assistance and management of the public, etc.

The public has been able to watch the championships from the stands of the Fadura facilities, the permanent one and annex that has been placed in order to be able to increase the capacity, allowed at 500 attendees.

An 80% entry has been registered of the capacity, with special attendance during the weekend.

It should be stressed that in the health protection aspect a strict control protocol was established and covid-19 detection procedures. Thus, all the participants had to submit a negative diagnostic test in order to be accredited.

Also the staff that has had contact with the athletes as well as the press accredited to move around the competition area, technical staff in the different tasks, etc.

In addition, during these four days, antigens and PCR tests have also been performed regularly according to needs and as control protocol, in the field hospital mounted within the safety space for the athletes. Another 452 antigens tests and 419 PCRs tests have been performed, in addition to those mentioned above.

In the last examination today three positive cases were registered in a group of one of the delegations. The protocols have been activated established according to the plan and the appropriate measures have been taken.
